I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest location or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

In the meantime, begin cleaning up any water, position a bucket to catch any drips, and remove significant things from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
