I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main shutoff valve for your property. If you are unable to find a water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to get things sorted.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, start mopping up any water, place a bucket to catch any drips, and clear away valuable items from the area. If the mains water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
