I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t locate a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains water tap to cut off all water to the property.

Once that is done, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you rapidly to fix the leak.

While waiting, clear away any important things from the area, and wipe up any water or place a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
