I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest valve or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

While you wait, start mopping up any water, place a bucket to catch any drips, and clear away significant items from the area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
