I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main valve for your property. If you are unable to locate a water valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s done, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you rapidly to get things sorted.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant items close to the leak, and wipe up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

The toilet has its own tap alongside the toilet bowl.
