I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have taps that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have a tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t find a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains water tap to stop all water to your house.

While waiting, clear away any significant things from the area, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.

Why is my tap dripping?

Find a length of string of some type, and knot it around the tap aerator so that it drapes down to the bottom of the skink or basin. The drips will slide down the string and trickle off quietly.
