I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest location or at the mains valve outside. If you can’t locate the main shutoff valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and reduce the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant things from the area, and clean up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
