I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

While you are waiting, remove any important possessions from the area, and wipe up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.
