I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you can’t find the main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the leak from growing, give our emergency plumber a call, at any time of the day or night. We’ll be there quickly to resolve the problem.

While waiting, remove any significant items close to the leak, and clean up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
