I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main shutoff valve for your home. If you’re unable to locate a tap to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

In the meantime, start wiping up any water, place a container to catch drips, and remove significant things from the affected area. If the property water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
