I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have service valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t find a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains shutoff valve to stop all water to your home.

While waiting, remove any important items from the area, and clean up any water or position a bucket to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.
