I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the water to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main valve for your home. If you’re unable to locate a main valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your home to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

While waiting, remove any important items from the area, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.
