I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that’s done, give our plumber a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, start wiping up any water, place a bucket to catch any drips, and remove valuable items from the affected area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
