I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve or at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant items close to the leak, and wipe up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
