I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have service valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have a tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t find a tap, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains water isolating tap to stop all water to the residence.

Once that’s sorted, give our team a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you promptly to get things sorted.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any important things close to the leak, and mop up any water or place a container to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.

If you have a plunger, it is worth trying to remove a blockage yourself. We suggest a plunger that has a long handle, especially for the toilet, so you can stand back out of the splash zone. Chemicals are not recommended as they seldom work well and can damage your drains.
