I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to find the water valve to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, remove any significant things, mop up any water, and place a bucket to catch drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
