I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest service valve or at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the main shutoff valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that is done, give our plumber a call, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant possessions from the area, and mop up any water or place a container to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.
