I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating valve below or beside the cistern. If you cannot find a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains valve to stop all the water to the home.

Once that’s sorted, give our team a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you rapidly to resolve the problem.

While waiting, remove any important possessions close to the leak, and mop up any water or place a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.
