I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you are unable to find a tap to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your house to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour day or night. We will be at your place as soon as we can to resolve the problem.

In the meantime, start cleaning up any water, place a bucket to catch drips, and clear away valuable things from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
