I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you can’t find the water main shutoff valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our team a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be there rapidly to fix the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, clear away any important things, wipe up any water, and put a bucket to catch drips. You should also turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
