I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have taps that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have a tap below or beside the cistern. If you cannot locate a tap, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains water valve to stop all water to your property.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important items close to the leak, and wipe up any water or put a container to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
