I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the water main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you promptly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for our emergency plumber to arrive, remove any significant things, mop up any water, and position a bucket to catch any drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
