I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the water main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there shortly to get things sorted.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any important things from the area, and mop up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.
